S.K. Hamrah’s History

S.K. Hamrah Rug Service was established in 1934 by Salim Khalil Hamrah. The name Hamrah is synonymous with quality rug cleaning, distinctive Oriental rugs and durable, attractive wall to wall carpeting. In our earlier years, S.K. Hamrah's main business was fine rug care. People sent their winter rugs out in the spring for cleaning and storage and replaced them with lighter weight hook, sisal or chenile rugs for the Summer season.

george_familyIn the early 1950's, S.K. Hamrah Rug Service Co. was purchased by the George family, which then consisted of my grandfather, Khalil George, my father, David K. George and my two uncles, Fred K. George and George K. George. My grandfather and his three sons were successors to the original Hamrah. After nineteen years, my father David and my uncle Fred decided to expand our offerings to include broadloom carpeting and Oriental rugs. This resulted in a total revamping of our facility, which is still in operation today (Plainfield location). We have been in the cleaning, repairing, buying and selling business ever since.

Through the years the George family has expanded its showroom to meet the needs of our customers while continuing to offer exceptional sevice with old world reliability.

S.K. Hamrah offers you not only service you can depend on, but reliability and superior quality that has been trusted for generations.

 Today

S.K. Hamrah is currently run by Robert D. George of Whitehouse Station, NJ and Charlie George of South Plainfield, NJ. in October of 2008, we expanded by opening a second showroom location in Hunterdon County, NJ.

Bob:

"Dad got me involved in the family business pretty early on. When I was eight or nine, he'd take me along on house calls.. We were very proud of our "Shop at Home" service, which allowed customers to browse samples and ask questions in the comfort of their own homes. It's a very common service that we still offer today but it was pretty cutting edge back then.

I also tagged along on wall to wall carpet cleaning jobs. I learned pretty early on how the carpet cleaning process works and, particularly, how dad liked to do it. He was very particular and learning to do it his way was a critical step towards carrying on the family tradition of expert rug cleaning, which will we still do today."
